How To Write The Perfect Financial Advisor Bio

Financial Advisor Bio

Most financial advisors haven’t completely filled out their LinkedIn profiles. They often have trouble writing about themselves and the benefits they offer clients. Writing a LinkedIn bio for financial advisors can be the most difficult type of writing, yet a great bio is critical when attracting prospects online. Follow these tips to create an impactful bio that resonates with website visitors and communicates what makes you different.

What Do You Do & Who Do You Do It For?

Your LinkedIn bio consists of two parts: your tagline and your LinkedIn summary profile.

The first step is to succinctly explain what you do and who you do it for in your tagline. Examples include:

  • A wealth manager to affluent women
  • A 403(b) specialist for teachers in Dallas
  • Financial planning for investors in their 20s and 30s


Folks reading your bio want to know—first and foremost—what your specialty is and who you serve. It’s important to resist the temptation to be too broad here. The more specialized your niche, the more interesting your bio will read. 

Here’s an example of my LinkedIn tagline:

Why Do Clients Choose You Over Competitors?

Your LinkedIn profile summary is where you dig deep and think about why your clients choose to work with you, rather than a competitor that offers similar services. Most advisors we work with haven’t thought through exactly why clients make the decision to work with them. It’s helpful to ask some of your clients why they hired you and what they think makes you different. Is it your experience in their particular demographic? The investment philosophy you offer? More than likely, clients choose to work with you because of a service-related aspect, like the trust they have with you or the support they feel from your staff.

Here’s my LinkedIn summary. Notice how I start by talking about my clients and what I do for them. Then I end by talking about my background:

What’s the Benefit Clients Value Most?

Clients choose to take action and work with you to solve one of their problems. Try to understand which problem you are solving for your top clients. Do you simplify their financial picture? Do you offer risk management that helps them sleep at night? Do you educate them so they can make informed financial decisions and feel empowered? By understanding the biggest problem you solve for clients, you can more persuasively illustrate the benefits you offer to potential clients.

Weave a Story

We know from analyzing website visitor behavior for thousands of advisors’ sites that people first want to know what you do, then why you do it. This compelling story is the most common missing thread in bios we read. Why did you get into this business and why do you come back each day? What drives you to serve your clients? Weave a story that illustrates your passion. One advisor who formerly worked as a curator for an art museum was moved to change his career after a tragic event: a group of wealthy families returning from a tour of the great museums of Europe were killed in a plane crash, leaving many of their children with no financial resources. Whatever your story, illustrate the why so people can understand what drives you.

Make it Personal

After understanding why you do what you do, people want to know who you are. How do you spend your free time? What are your hobbies and interests? What charitable causes are you passionate about? Sharing personal information allows prospects to find commonalities and get to know you, which is where a foundation of trust begins. List organizations you belong to and groups you’re involved with to give an added SEO boost. Don’t be shy in offering up personal details. We hear over and over from advisors that once they make their websites more personal, they get positive feedback from clients and prospects.

Bonus Tip: Try Writing Backwards

Having trouble getting started? Try writing your bio backwards. Start with the personal side, including your hobbies and interests, then move on to your experience. Write the most important opening paragraph last, when you’re warmed up.

Once you’ve followed these five steps, proofread and fine-tune your bio. Ask a friend or assistant to give it a quick review to make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Once you’re happy with the result, send it to compliance, feature it on your website, and don’t forget to share it on your social media profiles!

Kelli McLeod

Jillian has a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration and a minor in business administration from SUNY Brockport. Originally from Rochester, NY, she currently lives in Columbus, GA, with her husband, Tim (an Army captain), daughter, Macie, son, Henry, and two cats. After living in Austin, TX, for most of her adult life, Adriana now resides in San Antonio, TX (a city with a ton of history and many things to do), with her partner, Russell, and their dog, Abbey. She also has a brother and sister with whom she’s very close and tries to see a few times a year. Most of Adriana’s hobbies revolve around nature. She grew up spending lots of time on a sailboat or at a beach, and her family has a small cabin in Creede, CO, where she spends half the year hiking, camping, skiing, or snowshoeing (depending on the season). Lisa Gaines

Lisa Gaines spends her work days uploading blog posts to our clients’ websites and LinkedIn profiles, drafting emails, and making adjustments to content as advisors request. Lisa has learned a lot as a long-time member of the Indigo family and has enjoyed seeing the processes evolve to become more streamlined and efficient over time. Lisa is a proud alum of Texas A&M University, where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. As a military child, Lisa feels as though she grew up everywhere; however, she claims central Texas as home where most of her family is originally from. She currently lives in Fort Hood, Texas, with her husband, Korey (an active-duty Army officer), and two kids, Madelyne and Jameson. As a military family, Lisa moves quite a bit—often to areas where the job market is small. She loves that Indigo provides her with a steady job she can take with her wherever she goes. Jennifer Farrior is Indigo’s go-to for all things proofreading and editing. Her attention to detail is unmatched, and she takes pride in making sure every article is clean and concise before it heads out to our financial advisors. She says, “Even a single typo can affect an advisor’s credibility, and we strive for perfection when it comes to how they’re presented online.” As Lead Writer, Jennifer trains and manages the team of writers, and also writes and collaborates with team members to create Indigo’s blog posts and promotional material.

Jennifer holds a bachelor’s degree in English from UCLA. In addition to her role at Indigo, she runs her own copy editing and proofreading business, She Proofreads LLC. Jennifer hails from San Diego, California, but now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, with her three kids, Joshua, Julia, and Joel, and goldendoodle, Dexter. She loves working at Indigo because it provides her with the income, flexibility, and the community she needs as a stay-at-home mom. Outside of work, you can find her spending time with her kids, friends, boyfriend, or working on a puzzle while watching Netflix.

Sarah Robichaud

As a military spouse and mother, Sarah loves working for Indigo because of the flexibility it affords her, allowing her to continue to build her career while frequently relocating around the globe and working on her own schedule to accommodate a busy lifestyle. Adrian holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science with a specialization in software technology from De La Salle University Manila. Adrian considers himself somewhat of a workaholic, with a full-time day job in addition to working with Indigo. When he’s not working, he enjoys watching documentaries, action movies, and anime, and also loves cycling on muddy downhill trails or cross-country rides, playing video games, and simply resting when he can. He is also a licensed commercial pilot and flies in his free time; he obviously also enjoys traveling. Adrian lives with his family and more than a few pets (11 dogs, 6 cats, a few birds, and fish)—he has more pets than humans in his home!
